Women vs Walmart

We've been talking about gender equality in the workplace a bit and thought this might be interesting. What implications does this issue have for families?

  1. Reasons like this is why I feel like a little part of me dies every time I buy something from Walmart. It will be interesting to see how the Supreme Court rules.
Even though I would point out that the Supreme Court will only rule on whether or not the law suit can continue not on whether or not Walmart is guilty of discrimination. The issue is if a class action law suit can include such a large amount of people. Whether or not there was discrimination would have to be decided later, by a lower court. But it does open the door for more large class action law suits which has the potential to protect people from subtle abuses.

  2. In light of the articles I just read for class tomorrow on women in poverty not being able to provide adequate child care for their children, I think that having equal opportunities at work is important. I know that most salaries at Walmart probably aren't very competitive compared to some other companies, but there needs to be equality in opportunities for advancement. I don't know what the typical demographic is for a Walmart employee, but I would imagine that the main employees are lower class. They would need every opportunity to improve home life and the ability to provide sufficient needs for their families.
